Open Floor is a conscious movement practice to find our way back to ourselves physically and emotionally. on this journey we will discover a way to express our vulnerability, as well as our hard edges, our passion and our anxieties. we can unearth our unique expression in movement rooted deep inside of ourselves. we are guided back into the wisdom of our bodies and its unlimited healing powers.
Open Floor Movement Practice is a lively, sweaty, full-on dance inquiry:
- How can we move and include it all – feelings, other people, thoughts, wild passions, limitations?
- Can we use movement to soften the tight spots in our tender hearts and stretch our capacity for relationship?
- What happens if we turn old repetitive thoughts into choreography for creative dances?
We start small, end quiet. We respond to obstacles and mind the gaps. Ask, how am I now? What’s possible? Find direction. Add fire. Push the limit. Embrace paradox.
There’s an essential movement language we all speak when we take these questions to the dance floor. We call on universal elements that are inherent in any moving body, such as breath, gravity, centering, expansion and contraction. This is the common ground that all embodiment practices share.
Open Floor is where the rubber meets the road – a place for creative focus and loving attention.

elements of soul motion™
In a soul motion™ class, the dancer moves through four relational landscapes, using three core movement principles.
the four relational landscapes:
- dance intimate…. we move alone
- dance communion… we move with one other
- dance community… we move with everyone
- dance infinity… we move our practice to the everyday life
dance intimate, dancing alone we renew our relationship with the body as a shifting shape in space.
dance communion, inspired by interior impulses, sensations, and images the dancer begins to relate and communicate outwardly.
dance community , as dancers begin to move in ever widening circles, they receive and transmit information and inspiration to the larger dance happening all around them.
dance infinite, what happens in the dance room is a template for the everyday dance in the living world. we move out from the dance room sensing our environment more clearly, communicating with others with enhanced perception, and relaxing more readily with the challenges and obstacles that may dance before us.
the three core principles
pause presence, a meditative relaxation practice that allows the dancer to slow down, align, and recharge.
orbit orientation, the dancer is encouraged to consciously move in all directions with equal attention and without preference.
echo inspiration, dancers are guided to use each other’s movements to inform and inspire them.
